Growing Success Through Commercial Vegetable Farming

Janaki Chaudhary and Buddhi Ram Chaudhary are hardworking farmers associated with Centre No. 23 under the Gadhawa Branch Office of Aatmanirbhar Laghubitta Bittiya Sanstha Limited. The institution is promoted by the Rural Women’s Development Centre. Through dedication, proper use of loans, and continuous effort, the couple have developed commercial vegetable farming into an important source of income for their family.
Like many rural families, Janaki and Buddhi Ram wanted to improve their financial condition by using the land and skills available to them. They understood that traditional farming alone might not provide enough income throughout the year. Therefore, they decided to focus on commercial vegetable farming, which could offer regular production and better opportunities in the local market.
Aatmanirbhar Laghubitta Bittiya Sanstha Limited supported their plan by providing access to credit. Over time, they have received and used loans of up to NPR 700,000 from the institution. They invested the loan in vegetable seeds, fertilizers, irrigation, farming tools, labour, and other materials required for commercial farming. Instead of using the money for unnecessary expenses, they carefully invested it in productive agricultural activities.
At present, Janaki and Buddhi Ram are growing a wide variety of seasonal vegetables on their land. They have planted cucumbers and yardlong beans on five katthas of land. On another three katthas, they are cultivating bitter gourds, bottle gourds, and watermelons. They have used two katthas for potatoes, squash, and pumpkins. In addition, broccoli, onions, cabbage, and other vegetables have been planted on another two katthas of land.
Growing different types of vegetables has helped them reduce business risks. When the price or production of one vegetable is low, income from other crops can support the farming business. Their diversified farming practice also allows them to produce vegetables in different seasons and supply fresh products to the local market.
Their success did not come without challenges. Commercial vegetable farming requires regular care, timely irrigation, protection from insects and diseases, and proper market management. Weather changes and unstable market prices can also affect production and income. However, Janaki and Buddhi Ram continued working patiently and responsibly. They paid close attention to their crops and learned from their farming experience.
Their hard work has gradually made vegetable farming a reliable economic activity for the family. The income from the farm helps them manage household expenses and continue investing in agricultural production. Their progress shows how financial support, when combined with discipline and commitment, can help rural families become more self-reliant.
